Title: Starting before login in Linux
Post by: hornetster on May 20, 2010, 07:18:09 PM
Have just found Teamviewer and looks great.
Just wondering how to automatically start it in Linux (Suse 11.2) prior to logging on, so it can be setup to boot and wait for a connection?
I know this is easy enough in Windows, but am after the Linux solution...  :D
Thanks, John.

I have the same problem, if anyone has found a solution, please  post :) Didn't manage with changing the permissions on TeamViewer or Wine for that matter.

I would also value this knowledge.

I have used linux for a while but not to a level where I know how to manipulate the OS like loads others do.

I use Fedora 12.

So far, I've managed to find the following: (but I think this thread may have started from the comments there)

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1471247

However, maybe the TeamViewer developers could help?

I am also very anxious to find a solution. I run TeamViewer host on several Windows computers which has this capability. I'd like to extend this capability to Ubuntu.

Hello:
I asked this question in an email to Teamviewer and received this answer:
At this moment, you can put the TeamViewer in the Autostart of the User on the Linux PC.
Also you could configure the Auto-Login for the User on the Linux PC.
So TeamViewer will automatically starts when the Linux PC will be started.

My take on it is that it is not possible to start Teamviewer prior to log in (like the Windows version). The response above is a workaround.

That's not a workaround - *somebody* still needs to log on to PC, so the original question still remains......

My interpretation was different. If one goes to:
System / Administration / Login Screen
and selects 'Unlock' and then  'Log in as <user> automatically'

then when rebooted, the login is bypassed and TeamViewer starts without user intervention. I suggested it was a work around although it may be totally unacceptable from a security standpoint. As an aside, I found an article that explains how to use VNC to gain access prior to login. The only thing I don't like about this technique is that it starts a different session ie, Display 1 compared to the session you would have if you logged in. This may or may not present a problem to me.

it would be great if TV could start as a daemon in linux...but until they develop an native linux version and not one that is using WINE like the current version this will not be possible.... very disappointing as setting up auto login is a bad workaround causing a security risk,
