I was just wondering, how often does the random password change? Is it just each time TeamViewer starts (which is effectively each time the computer starts, if TeamViewer is running in the background), or more often than that?

it should generate a new password each time a new session is started.
you can be sure of that:
Click on Extras > Options
Go to Advanced and click on "Show advanced options"
For "Random password after each session", select "Generate new".
Click on Ok

Thank you. Please could you tell me what 'session' means exactly? Is a session a remote control session, or is a session a time when the TeamViewer program is running?

OK, I've worked it out.
The random password changes every time the computer is switched on. I don't think there's a way to change that.
Depending on the settings, it can also be made to change after every remote control session.
This can be very confusing for newcomers, especially those helping out friends and family by using TeamViewer for remote troubleshooting. You tell them to install TeamViewer and tell them to let you know their ID and password, and they do that, they write down the ID and password on a PostIt note and phone you up to let you know - but then, abracadabra... it's suddenly a completely different password! It would be great if this could be made clearer in the Help.

At this same location you can set 'Keep current', or you can direct the friends etc that you are supporting to install the 'unattended host' version. Then they set a static password during the install.

I think the 'Keep current' only means that the password stays the same after each remote control session. You still get a different random password when the computer is restarted.
It's not really clear during installation what the difference is between 'Basic installation' and the second option for remote access - since the Basic installation can also be used for remote access. Or do you mean that there is an entirely different download for an unattended host version? Anyway, it all amounts to the same thing, once you've got a personal (permanent) password set up.

Thanks. I suppose there's no reason to get them to install that now though, if they've already got the 'normal' one installed?

If they have the full version of TeamViewer installed - Have them go to the Extra - Options Security Tab
There you can put in a permanent Password that will not change
If you have the Remote Host only - Right click on the TeamViewer ICon down by the clock - Go to Option - Same Setup
To always have the TeamViewer host start when you restart the Computer - on the General Tab in Options click the Start with Windows
