This is likely addressed in the past, but I didn't find it by searching... ???
I frequently log on to other computers, both professional and personal, and two of my clients upgraded from TV8 to TV9. :o
I was still using TV8 at work, and as such was not able to connect to them until I either upgraded my own computer, or quit TV8 and ran TV9 in "one time" mode. :(
Of course, once I upgraded , I no longer had access to my own work computer from home unless I also upgraded all of them too, including 2 desktops and 2 laptops. >:(
This is a real nuisance and I really don't see any reason for it.
As a result, when I DID log on, I went into their settings and disabled the "check for new version" and set "update automatically" to "update never." :-\
Any new versions, while running in host or server mode should allow older clients to connect. :)
Can someone tell me how to cast a vote to allow this to happen in future versions. ;D
Thanks, Mark.

God I wish
This is one thing that drives me mental.
When I purchased TeamViewer for a lifetime version licence, I didn't realise that their business model involved creating a new version every year, and that these weren't backwards compatible.
My solution has been to create a Virtual Machine that I run the latest 'free' version on, and keep my computers on the version that I have a paid licence for. They are madly trying to sell me a ver 9 licence at the moment, but I suspect that the time is nearly there for a version 10. It is about anniversary time.
You do realise that this is NOT official Team Viewer support, but a user run site??

SUPER ANNOYING.
As a paying subscriber to Teamviewer you're often subject to LESS quality product than when you are a free customer.
I'll probably uninstall my licensed versions and just use the free version because it's not backwards compatible and I can't be installing the older and newer versions all the time.
