Title: TeamViewer 11-- cannot get the menu on the remote machine

I am logging on a Linux machine (running Mint 17.3) from another Linux machine.  I get in and see the desktop, but there is no panel and I cannot get to the menu, or even open a terminal.  It looks as if the remote machine is ignoring me.  I know that my local machine is OK, since I can login on other machines without any trouble.  My remote machine is in another country, so I cannot simply go and reboot it.  What do I do?
