Blank (black) screen when using TeamViewer
« on: March 08, 2014, 08:06:30 PM »
I installed TeamViewer 9 on my home server running Windows Home Server 2011 a couple weeks ago.  It worked perfectly until we moved to our new home last week where several variables changed.  New cable modem, new router and I removed the video card from the server since it doesn't need a video card.

Now when I remote in, I get a completely black screen and it will stay black until I send the Ctrl+Alt+Del combination.  Then when I move the mouse around, I get pixelated images of the background of the login screen.  (see attached screenshot)

I can RDP into the server when I'm on my LAN and it works just fine, but when trying to use TeamViewer from inside my LAN or outside my LAN, I get the same results.

I've tried googling this problem and I've found several different things that fixed the issue for others, however that hasn't worked for me.  What could be the issue?  Do I need to open or forward certain ports in my router?  Is there something I need to enable/disable on my server?

I read an article posted by someone who was using a Mac Mini and was having the same issue as you.  They would get a black screen when no monitor was plugged in via HDMI, but once a monitor was plugged in it would work.  They eventually found an adapter that was a ThunderPort (?) to VGA adapter and once that was plugged in, it would work even if no monitor was connected to the adapter.

Another post said that they disabled their screensaver and it fixed their problem.

My machine doesn't have a screensaver set and it isn't a Mac Mini and I haven't tried connecting a monitor since all I have in onboard video via VGA port and I do not have a VGA monitor to test it with right now...

Also, I submitted a ticket the same time I posted this thread and it's been acknowledged as received but I haven't heard anything back yet.

In the mean time, I've setup my Windows Home Server 2011 as a VPN and fixed all the port forwarding, etc in my router so I have just been VPN'ing into my home network and server and then using Remote Desktop.  It's a few more steps, but it is working for me for now.  I would still like to get TeamViewer back up and running though...

I got a reply from the support ticket with TV, it is as follows:

Dear *****
Thank you for your interest in TeamViewer.

There two ways to solve your problem:
1- Change your graphic card driver settings to keep it always alive. You have a black screen because your graphic card goes on spare energy mode.
2- Use a dummy plug.

If we may of further assistance, please don't hesitate to contact us again.

So i have tried playing around with the graphics card settings but it seems there isnt anywhere i can stop my graphics card (intel 4400), i have also tried having a dummy HDMI cable and mini display port plugged in without being plugged into a monitor to see if it would trick the computer into thinking its plugged in but with no joy
