HELP! Can't restore TV9
« on: December 08, 2014, 08:32:00 PM »
OK, this is pretty exasperating. Have used TV for MANY years, and I'm quite familiar with it. I was using TV9, and figured I'd upgrade to TV10. Trashed my TV9, and loaded up TV10. Tried to launch it and, whoops, it says it won't run on my 10.6.8. OK, no big deal, I'll just restore TV9. Copied that application from another machine, launched it, and .. the icon in the dock had a blinking dot next to it for a few minutes. Then the dot stopped blinking, suggesting that TV was open. It was not. Nothing. I am informed on the dock that "Application Not Responding", and no TV icon appears in the menubar. Tried loading a fresh copy of TV9 from the web. Same thing.

So now I'm stuck. I can't get TV9 to load on a machine that was running it handily for years. I suspect that in trying to launch TV10, it screwed up some auxiliary TV files.

I removed the TeamViewer folder in Application Support, but it still won't launch. Is there something else that I need to remove to thoroughly uninstall TV before restoring it?

Perhaps significantly, I can load and launch TV Quick Support on this machine, and it works fine. That is, I can access this machine from another remote machine that way. But TV9 (by the way, this is the TV 9.0.32669 version, which I had been using successfully) simply refuses to launch. Maddening.

I have now made some progress by finding, and removing, the following files --

com.teamviewer.plist
com.teamviewer.Helper.plist
com.teamviewer.teamviewer_service.plist
com.teamviewer.teamviewer.plist
com.teamviewer.teamviewer.desktop.plist

Having removed these files, I can actually launch TeamViewer, and it can even put the machine online, but as I am filling out preferences, it hangs, and I have to kill the program.

I suspect I did not remove all the associated TeamViewer files. I guess my question becomes, exactly which files do I have to remove to do a complete uninstall of TeamViewer, such that I can then do a clean install. Can anyone tell me *exactly* which files need to be removed to do a clean install of TeamViewer? I must say that I've never had this problem in doing regular 6->7->8->9 upgrades.

and the answer is ...  (from TeamViewer support, who got back to me within 36 hours)

My problems were caused because the uninstallation of Teamviewer was not complete. Now, the TeamViewer files are hidden all over the place. The way to find them is with the free app "AppCleaner" from Freemacsoft. You just launch that, select Applications, and check the box for TeamViewer. It will locate all TeamViewer files, and offer to delete them. Do that, reboot, install TeamViewer (and reset the prefs, as needed) and you're done. It works!

Thank you, TeamViewer support!!

I've put the answer under an independent post, since it's so handy.
