Install program from CD at my computer to remote computer
« on: May 17, 2015, 03:17:05 PM »
I am trying to help my mother with her new Windows 8.1 notebook via my own Windows 8.1 notebook in another city.

One of the programs I'd like to install for her is a game that I'd installed on her old Win7 machine. I have the CD here and would like to install it on her computer.

What's my best way of doing this? I won't be up her way again for a couple of months and I'd rather not make her do without her game that long. (Her old Win7 machine is here with me; she gave it to me to use for a Linux-based project.) I suppose I could make an .iso of the CD on my computer, file transfer it over to her computer, then use ImgBurn to burn it to a CD but I'm hoping there's some easier way that hasn't occurred to me yet.

Try a VPN connection first

If that doesn't work then I'd look at making an ISO, transferring via file transfer then using something like  Virtual Clone drive ( a Microsoft freebie) to show the ISO as a drive...

Can you suggest a good free VPN that is easy to use?

TeamViwer has VPN built in

In the extra's tab in the top connection bar

How do I activate the TeamViewer 10 VPN? I clicked on VPN under Extras and it brings up a submenu with three options but all of them are grayed out. I assume I have to do something to turn the VPN options on. Or are they only available with a paid licence rather than the free one?

For posterity sake, I just wanted to mention that I found a video on YouTube that explained how to make a VPN connection to a computer that you are trying to help.  Here's the URL in case anyone's interested; it's just 5 minutes long:

I still have a followup question or two though and since this thread seems dead, I'll start a new one for those new questions.
