Unable to initiate programme on OSX

I have used Teamviewer in the past to access my Windows PC from my iPad2, no problems, so I am familiar with the ins and outs.  I have now switched to OSX 10.9.4 and am having trouble installing Teamviewer to it. 

I download the latest version 9, click to install, it does its thing and I end up with the expected icon in my Applications folder.  So far so good.  When I open the programme from that icon it asks me to set a remote access password which I do.  When I click Finish, Teamview closes and the icon disappears from my programme bar at the bottom of the screen.  I open it again from the icon in Applications, it asks me to set a password again and from there just repeats the process just described.  Suggestions to get beyond this would be appreciated.
