unknown reason - can't connect

i'm new to the forum and can't find an answer to my problem.  maybe i'm not searching properly...  i feel certain someone has asked this at some point - so please forgive me if my question has been addressed previously.

i have download the most current free version of teamviewer.  i am using windows 8.1 and am trying to connect to computer with windows 7.  on partner's computer, incoming connection shows up, then it can't connect - thus the "unknown reason" message.  these 2 computers have connected in the past with no problems.  the only major change that i can think of is that i have updated from windows 8 to 8.1.  can someone please make a suggestion as to how resolve my problem?  i have searched the internet and teamviewer's website and can't find a solution.  thanks in advance for your help.
