Reading a File on another PC without copying/transferring it
« on: April 26, 2015, 10:46:12 AM »
Hello,  My need is very simple, and guessing VPN will solve. But VPN seems the least documented part of TV10 and as people here have commented that most VPN questions here are never answered or even commented on.  I have sent in a ticket, but it is Sunday so may get no answer today, and have been held up for 5 days on this issue.

I have everything else in TV working, its a good product.   My last need is to read a file on another PC over internet.  There are several file formats that can be read while still being written and "live", that is the need.   GoogleDrive does work, but very slow, you can not start reading until 5 minutes, even 10 after file has been uploaded, but then it will go for 30 mins or whatever.

File Box and Drag and Drop in TV do not do it,  static, it cuts the file off where it was on drop.

Any simple network will do this, does anyone here know how to use TV to read a file on another PC, not transfer it?
I presume VPN will do this, but even though can get ping to work one way have never been able to see a drive on another PC thru it from a program.   For example try to open a Word File on PC B, with Word on  PC A.

There is a big need for a Video on how from step one (start TV) to setup VPN and use it.   Have looked everywhere and not been able to find that.  If someone could screen cap a video of reading a file on another PC with Word or whatever thru VPN that would be most helpful.

My ticket to is big, so will not put it in this post, will make it separate post.

On VPN even though it pings, when click on "Explore" it says "The PC IP is unavailable, you may not have permission"

Thanks for help in advance!

This is the ticket sent in:

Hello TeamViewer,

On Tuesday last week had determined Teamviewer was a good solution, just had one last function needed to get working, VPN, then was going to buy a copy. Had troubles with VPN error mesgs and setup, and found it the least documented part of TV10. There is really no video on how to use it that steps through it, either by you or others. I have friend who is super expert on networks so reached out to him, was unable to reach him till yesterday, he had been in hospital with drug reaction, still can not help me. Tried another programmer that know who works for MS, have not been able to reach him.

In retro should have come to you for help first. Went yesterday to http://teamviewerforums.com/ and found out that most questions about VPN are NEVER answered or even commented on, and people there comment that they can never get answers to VPN questions. With a simple video of using VPN from start to end (guess 3 mins would do it) these problems can be solved. I strongly recommend that TeamViewer do that.

I have seen mention of File Box, and it might meet my needs. I can not find it now in VPN section it  After sending this found when Remote Control is selected first.

The rest of you product is easy to use and there are videos that show how to use those features. I may have missed things, but with really good documentation and videos it is almost impossible to miss things. First what is the need? The need is to see from a remote unattended PC (R) my PC "Controlling (C) and read a file from it without transferring it. The same thing as reading a file from another drive or PC over network. That is all I need to do.

The drag and drop works the problem is its static, you get the file the way it was, not is 1 minute from now. I do not want to copy a file, want to read it the way it is on other PC to this very second. With Drag and Drop it cuts off the file where it was when copied. There are file types that can be read while they are still being appended to, at end of file. That is exactly what need to do. GoogleDrive does do this, but is very slow. But with 10 minute delay have got that to work, read it on one PC while being written on another one. With VPN it should be just seconds, not 5-10 minutes, hence need for TV10. My setup is one PC that thru TV10 controls another remote unattended PC that is mostly reading static files from its own disc. But at times need it to read a file on the controlling PC (where I am). With TV10 or any network that should be doable. As the screen cap collage shows, I have got the Controlling (C) PC to VPN with the Remote (R) and it pings fine but when try "Look at files with Explorer" feature it gives the error mesg in upper left of collage. If I try to use R to ping C, it does not work.

Any help you can give me will be greatly appreciated. I suggest passing this ticket to management, VPN is in great need of a video that leaves out no steps.

Hi,  William of TV  in Australia solved the problem.  It was sharing of folders and adding a password to the PC in Win7, would not work without a password being created.  Also putting the ip addres of other PC into the "open" box to see the folder.

So not obvious.
