Newb Can't get started
« on: January 18, 2012, 08:43:52 PM »
Hi all, I am trying to connect from my laptop to my media PC using the latest version, using "exclusively" LAN connections, and I'm just not getting any love.

I'm on a fast network, can ping and access shares on the media server but can't connect. Running Windows 7 Home Premium. Did set the "allow remote connections" flag in the computer properties.

The error I receive is "A connection could not be established. Reason unknown."

Have tried setting the proxy to same as web and none, same result either way.

When I attempt to connect to the media PC from my laptop then check the log file on the media PC it is completely empty, i.e. the local copy of TV doesn't know a connection is being attempted. When I attempt a connection in the other direction, here's what I see:

Code: [Select]

That "matchingdeviceID" thing is interesting. I have searched for that on the forums and not found it.

Any help is appreciated.

No replies yet, so I'll ask a few other questions to reduce the infinite number of troubleshooting combinations...

  • I don't think I need to activate the license if I'm only connecting inside of the network - correct?
  • Do I need to set up any account information, display name, email, black white lists, passwords etc on the connecting computer?
  • Do I need to open ports on the router if I want to use lan exclusively (I do)?
  • Do I need to add TV to Windows Firewall?
  • Are their issues with using the default Windows WORKGROUP? These computers are in a home group on Win7.
  • Only looking at TV because MS restricted Remote Desktop from Win 7 Home Prem 64 bit (why!?) would this MS product also have an issue?
  • Do I need to use the Computers and Contacts window for any reason to connect only to one computer? I'm assuming I will be prompted to sign into the "partner" computer once  I connect to it.
  • Why does the "Your ID" field look like it has a bunch of IP addys crammed in there instead of a simple ID? (see image below)
  • Anything else?

Can't figure how to make it bigger, so here's the link to the picture:

I'm no expert, Braddo, but I'll offer what I can.
I have a mixture of Win7Ult, Vista and XP and others on my LAN so I have no Home Group.
Tv should be fairly uncomplicated to install; that's the beauty of it, but you may have particular circumstances.

Advanced sharing settings include:
Home or Work
on n/w discovery
on file and printer sharing
on sharing so anyone with network access...
enable file sharing... 40-56 bit encryption
off password protected sharing
use user accounts and pwds to connect..
Public settings much the same.

No licence is necessary if you are using Tv for home use, and you've said as much. Exclusively.
You don't need to set up an a/c with Tv; each just phones home and asks for a session, each time you connect.
Port control isn't nesessary, unless you have previously closed them.
WinFirewall never appears.
Win Wrkgrp no big deal.
Remote Desktop must be a Pro/Ultimate thing, philosophically.
C&C window shouldn't be nec'y for just two poots. It's a quick-swap thing.
'Your ID' field looks a mess. I've only ever seen it with nnn nnn nnn, codes embedded in a few places within each system for life.

With Tv sitting on-screen on both you should be able to simply enter the Id and password of the other and connect.
You'll need to clean up the Id field, I'd say, before you make much headway.

An interesting aside: I was 'shaped' towards the end of last month; slowed by my ISP.  I expected Tv authentication to be slower than normal, and it was, but in spite of my having set 'accept LAN access...' the whole session was extremely slow.  That tells me that there's constant phoning home; it doesn't seem to be as simple as authentication then fallback to the LAN.  So you'll certainly need good and constant access out, even on a simple LAN.

I'd try deconstructing your setup. Can you revert to defaults everywhere?  Use a simple router?  Swap 64-bit disks out and test with 32-bit Win7?  Deconstruct.
Maybe a Tv tech will come wandering by. They appear occasionally. Strange that assistance is so poor for such an ostensibly good product.

I'm no expert either.

I've recently purchased Tv for commercial use.
I looked at alternatives, and some of the alternatives I had used for many years.

Tv does some things very well, including...
1. The end to end encryption
2. The unattended server
3. The elimination of things like proxy servers and firewalls
4. The file transfer
5. The chat, VOIP and video chat
6. The VPN
 and the list goes on

There are of course some things that Tv doesn't do well. (printers anyone??)

In your situation, just wanting to control a machine from home LAN, I'd look at a different solution
One of the VNCs most likely. I like UltraVNC, but there are many variants, most are free to use and open source.

No internet access required, you connect direct from one to the other.
You can even set to access via a web browser, so you could easily control your media PC from your smart phone.

Thanks for the comments. I did want the option at some point if I need to connect to the machine externally, but for now just doing it inside of the network. I've used various flavors of vnc in the past, just thought this looked like a good product to try.

Judging from the answers above i think my setup should just be working at this point. But i'll try a few suggestions and see what happens.

However, two things concern me that don't look right. What's that "MatchingdeviceID" error in the log? Why is the YourID field seemingly corrupted?

One other aspect of the network is that I have a 24 port switch in there as well, but that's typically transparent to any networking traffic as far as I've seen.

Thanks -

matt

No idea about the log, I've never been sleepless enough to dig to deeply into the log for Tv - I will say that they are very verbose, and often verbose logs say things like 'error' when there isn't really an error that isn't automatically bypassed.

The Your ID field can have stuff in it if you accidentally type or paste stuff into it.
Just highlight the lot and delete it. As Phred says, use the Tv ID which is in the form XXX XXX XXX

I do a lot of work around and through 24 port switches. These should not present an issue to you.

btw VNC ports can be forwarded through your router to your media centre for 'external' access. :)
