Locking OS On End Of Session
« on: November 12, 2016, 01:03:53 PM »
Okay, this one has me baffled.  How do I keep TV from locking the operating system on end of session from iPhone/iPad for only selected computers in my list?  Looks like there is an all or nothing setting.  For example, if I have five computers in my list, I may only three of them to auto lock and set the other two to never lock on end of session.  How do I do this?

The propensity of TV to lock machines on session end is a common frustration here. It seems totally random. Sometimes it'll lock, and sometimes it won't. It can be argued that it is a security feature, but one that is totally inconsistent. Of course, the result of the lock is that you end up getting logged out on the machine you're connecting to, so when you reconnect, you have to log back in. No, it's not an "all or nothing setting". It's totally random, and there is no "setting".

Best I've managed to figure out (and I don't know if this applies to iPhone/iPad), is that the disconnect "X" in the control bar at the top will be marked with a little padlock if TV has randomly decided to lock when you end that particular session. You can pull down Actions and tell it not to do that. But you can never tell when it's going to want to do it.

As far as I know, it is a complete mystery why TV sometimes decides it wants to lock on session end. When I started using TV a few years ago it seemed to want to do it half the time. Now it only does so rarely.

Unlike Windows, the Lock menu item is missing from the Action menu in iOS versions.  Not sure why they would choose to omit this feature.  Had it been included, it would fix the problem.  I've never had the feature turn on and off randomly however on Windows as you described.

I connect to my Windows 10 desktop PC from my Windows 10 notebook. What I have experienced is that if the desktop PC is Unlocked when I connect to it then I have the option of just disconnecting (and leaving the desktop PC Unlocked) or of disconnecting and Locking it. However, if the desktop PC is Locked when I connect to it the only option I have is to disconnect and Lock it. If Locked on connection I can see no option to leave Unlocked on disconnection. Seems like a reasonable security feature to avoid inadvertently leaving a Locked device in an Unlocked state.

I should clarify. I log onto a Windows 7 machine from a Mac. The Win 7 machine is always unlocked. But frequently, when I disconnect, TV wants to lock the connection, though I never asked it to do so. I see the padlock icon, and I can cancel that lock. Are you saying that iOS doesn't offer that padlock icon, signifying that it's going to lock when the session is done? Or just that you can't cancel the lock in "Actions"?

I can't cancel the lock in Actions as that option isn't there.  I can go to the settings and enable/disable locking for ALL devices which does show the padlock when enabled.  However, there's no way to pick and choose which computers you want to auto lock.  It's all or nothing.

Ah, you mean "all of nothing" with respect to which computers get locked. iOS doesn't offer you an "Actions" pulldown on a particular session.  I didn't know that. You can "go to the settings and enable/disable locking for ALL devices which does show the padlock when enabled"? I don't see that. Where are you looking? Oh, now I'm using TV 9, as I've never trusted the newer versions and I have a few machines with legacy OSs. Maybe that's an option in newer TVs?

I mean that all or no machines will lock at the end of the session depending on whether the "Lock remote computer" option in the app's global settings is toggled on or off.  The settings icon is located in the bottom right corner of the screen.  There is an "Actions" menu that is available in a session in iOS, but unlike Windows, there is no "Lock on Session End" item in that menu.  That's the problem.  The TV box is on macOS Sierra.  I want to lock my Windows boxes after every session, but not my TV box as there is no keyboard/mouse hooked up to this box to log back in.  It's just on all the time and my TV shows are selected in KODI by the Apple Remote.

I understand. So in the iOS app, there is a "Lock remote computer" option. Wouldn't it be nice if there were one in a desktop OS.
